Before
you start to pack, throw away, sell, or donate any unwanted items.
This will make packing go a lot quicker!
Items Needed:
- Packing cartons: Applegate Moving and Storage stocks
all of the necessary cartons to suit your needs. Delivery of these
cartons can be arranged
prior to the move.
- Plain unprinted newspaper: This is especially
important for wrapping valuable items. Ink from printed newspaper
can cause permanent
stains.
- Markers: Have a marker handy while packing to label
the contents of the cartons and the room. It is better to label
the sides
of the cartons,
not the top.
- Tape: Packing tape is usually clear or light brown
in color. A tape dispenser can come in handy too. Always tape
the box on the
seams
twice. DO NOT
USE DUCT OR MASKING TAPE!
- Plastic bags and trash bags: Keep
a trash bag in every room; there will always be something to
throw out. Small baggies
for hardware
or wires
and small parts will also come in handy.
Basic Packing Rules:
- Valuables such as coin or stamp collections, or
jewelry should not be packed into the moving van. You should either
take
these items
with you
or have an insured, traceable carrier such as FedEx
or UPS ship these items.
- Write the room name and contents
on all sides of the boxes you pack. This will help you find things
when you
unpack.
- Incorrect packing is the prime cause of damage.
The box should weigh no more than 50 lbs and the contents
should
not shift
within the
box. The sides of the box should not bulge, and
the top should close without
caving in. Always use plenty of paper to fill
any voids.
- As a rule, the heavier the item, the smaller the
box. This is especially true when packing books
or CD's.
- If there are valuable items that you are not comfortable
packing, we can pack them for you and they
will be fully insured.
New Home Supplies:
These items should be packed last, loaded last,
and unloaded first.
- Bedrooms and baths: Bedding, shower curtains, phones,
alarm clocks, towels
- Toiletries: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toilet
paper.
- First aid kit
- Household/kitchen supplies: Paper plates,
cups, utensils, trash bags, paper towels, coffee maker.
- Tools: Hammer
screwdrivers, utility knife, nails and screws.
- Personal- change of
clothing for everyone, baby needs and pet supplies.
Items Not To Pack:
When in doubt, do not pack it. By law, there are
certain items that we are not allowed to move, so be sure you do not
pack them. Flammables,
explosives and corrosives (batteries), lamp oil, aerosols, propane
tanks, ammunition, oil based paints. Make sure you drain all gasoline-powered
equipment a few days before the move, so the gasoline evaporates.
If you are transporting firearms, contact your sales representative,
as
there may be additional documentation required. Also, do not pack
any prescription medications.
Appliances and Electronics:
Appliances should be clean, dry and disconnected
on moving day. Movers are not insured to disconnect or reconnect appliances.
Electronics
should also be disconnected. Flat screen TV’s should be packed
in the original carton with the foam, or the moving company can pack
them for you. Mark connections with tape if necessary. BE SURE TO RETURN
ANY CABLE BOXES, USUALLY YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR A LOST CABLE BOX ABOUT
$ 200.
